The full moon is August 10, 2014 at 2P.M. EDT and we are in for a big, juicy super moon. It will be the biggest moon of the year. A super moon means that the moon will be closest to the earth’s orbit making it appear bigger and brighter than other full moons. The super moons are also the most super charged. The best time to view it is just after sunset when the moon is rising out of the horizon.
Full Sturgeon Moon
Some Native American tribes called this month’s Moon the Sturgeon Moon because they knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this full Moon. Around the Great lakes, in Native American tradition, Sturgeons were considered the royalty of fishes (also prized by Europeans for their precious caviar). Working with Sturgeon medicine can teach you about determination, perseverance, depth, knowledge, generosity, strength, and sexuality. Is there a big fish you are trying to catch? Is there an area of your life that can benefit from Sturgeon medicine and the power of the moon? This is a good time to cast your net into the great big sea of opportunity and reap the rewards of your patience and determination.
Different tribes had different Moon names. Other examples for August are: Wheat Cut Moon (San Ildefonso, and San Juan), or “Moon When All Things Ripen” (Dakota Sioux) or “Blueberry Moon” (Ojibway). If you haven’t feasted on blueberries yet this year, do it now! Blueberries are an excellent source of antioxidants, have a low glycemic index meaning that they won’t spike your blood sugar and are simply delicious. They are one of my favorite summertime indulgences, especially with raw cream or coconut milk.
The full moon is an outstanding time to complete projects, set intentions for the upcoming month and release that which is no longer serving us (relationships, personal patterns, etc.) I like to gather personal items in my home that I no longer use and give them away on the full moon. Completion is a good thing.
Ceremony on the full Moon
There are several ways to utilize full moon energy. One of my favorite ways is to put all my crystals out on the grass as the moon begins to rise and leave them there for the whole night to clear away energy that they have collected and to charge them for the upcoming month. There is a palpable energetic shift in the crystals; often their colors brighten and become clearer too. Moon magic!
I also like to do ceremonial fire. To do this, build a safe fire pit far from overhanging branches and dry leaves (Safety first, Sensual lovers). Clear yourself with sage or cedar smoke to prepare for the ceremony. Call in the directions of South- Snake, West- Jaguar, North- Hummingbird, East- Eagle, Mother Earth and Father Sky. These animals and directions were taught to me during my Q’ero Shamanic training program and the ones I am most comfortable using. If you use other associations for the directions , please play as you feel comfortable.
Write a list of things that you are ready to release, blow your prayers into the paper and release it into the fire. Watch the paper be consumed by the flames and released into smoke to be transformed. I may sound a little hippie-dippy but I find tremendous value in utilizing the energy full moon and the concentrated intention of ceremony to galvanize my life, work, romance, energy and healing.
With fire ceremony, wait until all the wood has burned before you turn your back. It is a form of respect and a way to honor the fire energies. When all the wood has been consumed, close the ceremony by thanking the individual directions for showing up and infusing their energy into the work.
Drink a lot of water, get a good night’s sleep and wake up knowing that you have released that which doesn’t serve you anymore to make space for more of what you want and deserve.
Stay tuned Sensual lovers. I can’t wait to share more witchy, spiritual, earth-based magic with you.
Please let me know how you like to honor the moon? I am so excited to read your responses.
In the bright, beautiful light of the full moon, and watery Yin energy,
