For many, there is nothing more depressing than a Monday morning in January in the Northern hemisphere? From this vantage point, there are at least six, probably closer to eight more weeks of winter’s wrath. To be a Canadian, one needs to know how to survive with lightness in our hearts.
Eating tropical or raw food in the winter is not something I generally recommend for myself or for my clients. Cold causes constriction in the body and the last thing we need in the winter is more tightness… However, every now and then, we need to break the rules. We need to remember that even in the bleakness of winter, somewhere, life is growing and thriving. We can feast on that inspiration.
Today, my local grocery store stocked passionfruit (maracujá in Portuguese) and I just couldn’t say no. In one sip, I was instantaneously, gloriously right back in the sunshine of Brazil. And my heart is light again.
Sensual lovers, of course, if I am going to break the rules, I do so in style. I made my juice in a balanced, supportive, winter-appropriate way.
I used warm (previously boiled) water for the base of the drink so that the cold nature of the fruit wouldn’t penetrate deeply. Schizandra berry is an amazing superfood tonic. It is known as “the herb that does it all.” It develops and protects the primary energies of life. Schizandra, known as the “quintessence of Chinese tonic herbs,” supports vitality and beauty when used regularly for some time. It is said to promote beautiful skin. Schizandra can help purify the blood, support the mind, help maintain a strong memory, and help maintain sexual energy and sexual functions in both men and women. (www.dragonherbs.com) It is powerful stuff.
I then added a little aroma magic. Neroli essential oil elevates the energy of the drink and gives it a flowery-orange flavor that works beautifully with passionfruit. Vanilla essential oil is warming, grounding, sweet and delicious. The combination of the two makes for an aromatic win!
Sensual lovers, here is my aromatic, superfood, enlightened passionfruit juice. Happy wintery Monday, keep reaching for the light! And for those of you in Northeastern US, I hope the storm is mellow. Stay warm and cozy.
