Sweet, delicious sensual lovers, here we are. It’s less than a week away from the launch of my book, Aromatherapy for Sensual Living- Essential oils for the Ecstatic Soul published by Skyhorse Publishing. It has been quite a round-the-world, life changing journey to get here and wow, oh wow I am excited for its manifestation. It’s been a long road, there’s no turning back.
My love affair with essential oils started when I was a teenager. After reading an article about the ancient power of essential oils, something inside me clicked. Like a curious witch in search of her next spell, I needed to find out more. After a couple false starts, I discovered a store in downtown Toronto that specialized in pure, authentic aromatherapy. My first oil was Balsam Peru and it was love at first inhalation. I spent many hours in that little shop smelling, learning and deepening my life long love affair with the plants.
I had just entered university at the time. With innocent excitement, I took my little bottles with me to the library to help me study, after the party to help me equalize, and into my heart after more than one foolish romance. I loved learning about their properties and creating my own magic blends. The more I played with them, the more I wanted to use them. It felt like I was coming home- a rich, luxurious, delicious home.
After university, I landed a job as an international journalist. Most of the time, I stayed in hotels which lacked that special homey feeling that I need (I am a Gemini on the cusp of Cancer). In order to create that for myself, I would drop essential oils on the mattress and carpets. I would create mini-blends to suit my needs. Smell has a direct connection to our emotions. It did the trick to calm home-sickness and get the hotel staleness out of the air.
When I returned back to Canada, I committed to do healing work for my profession and started a ten year discovery of how to use holistic healing modalities to help people come into balance. At that time, I reconnected with Nadine Artemis of Living Libations (she owned the shop that introduced me to aromatherapy). It was an instant friendship and recognition. I spent many years with her and her family helping her with all aspects of her business. We blended up a many potions and formulas late into the night with many laughs shared. Over the years, Nadine and also I co-facilitated aromatherapy workshops in Toronto. It gave me the opportunity to sculpt my unique understanding of essential oils and learn from a master. What a gift!
In January 2009, I was invited to Japan by one of my former clients to teach a series of aromatherapy workshops in Tokyo and in the Kansai area. Japan was a glorious, and sometimes bizarre adventure. Oh the places we go! I was lucky enough to be there for cherry blossom season. I grew to love flowering trees, the rebirth of spring and exquisite natural beauty even more. I didn’t think that was possible.
Here we are! The story of how my book came to be. It’s the culmination of my lifelong love affair with the plants. The book idea started from a workshop I taught in February 2013 called Erotics, Exotics, Euphorics- Essential oils for the Sensual Soul. Everyday leading up to the workshop, I posted personality profiles for individual oils to give participants a better understanding how to use the oils, specifically in an erotic context. I found myself getting wildly excited watching these oils, that I have played with for twenty years come to life. It often got a little steamy too.
In December 2013, the book was picked up by Skyhorse Publishing. I flew down to Rio de Janeiro to write the remainder of the book and to shoot the photography with William Praniski. Brazil offered me amazing inspiration and insight from my favela (link to post about the favela) view.
I am very lucky to have lived in about 10 countries in my life. With Brazil, I fell head-over-heels in love- like dumb-drunk-stumbling in love. Its beauty, lush nature and ridiculously hot people stole my heart. I also have a very difficult relationship with the country. I see a terribly difficult place on the verge of collapse in a myriad of ways. I described Rio as my dirty, dangerous, sexy-as-hell lover who I just can’t shake. Some loves are like that. I pray a lot for Brazil. I am grateful for the gifts it offered me.
Perfume has a long standing connection with love and seduction. When we smell a whiff of the perfume of a former lover, we are instantly transported to that exact time and space. Scent is ancient and profound. It goes right into the hypothalamus, the oldest parts of our brains, to provoke an exact emotion or memory. The artistry, history, and power of perfume leaves me speechless and wanting more.
Aromatherapy has been my go-to medicine for twenty years. I use it for perfume, beauty products, medicine, cleaning products, and most intriguingly, for sexual stimulants (ladies and gentlemen, they are spine-tingling, libido-boosting treasures that work). Now, the book is complete and is ready for release. My baby is going out into the world. I am absolutely thrilled to share it with you. My wish is that the book helps you learn how to use essential oils in your everyday life to make everything better.
Aromatherapy for Sensual Living is a love letter from me to the flowers and an invitation for you to come along on this scented ride. The more you play with essential oils, the more they reveal their unique properties and characteristics to you. I promise you a stronger immune system, more confidence and best of all, longer, hotter, more connected nights of love.
Please like and share the book. Buy it for yourself, your best friend, your sister and your mom. Invite pure flower power into your life and watch your life bloom in ways you never thought possible. There is pure, potent magic in those aromatic molecules; it took me all over the world. I wonder what will happen for you?
One whiff and your whole life can change.
In light, love, and perfumed ecstasy,
